Marlec FM1803-2 48V Wind Turbine 840W Peak Power

  • 1.8m diameter land-based wind turbine with up to 840W peak output in strong winds, designed for reliable battery charging at remote sites.
  • Long cable runs possible thanks to high-voltage three-phase AC from the turbine and dedicated MPC-2 controller for 48V battery systems.
  • Proven furling tail and robust UK build for off-grid homes, telecoms, CCTV and monitoring in harsh weather.

Brief description

The Marlec Rutland FM1803-2 48V Furlmatic Windcharger is a 1.8m, three-blade land-based wind turbine supplied with a matched MPC-2 controller for charging 48V battery banks at remote off-grid sites. It starts generating in light winds, delivers around 60W at 5m/s and up to approximately 840W peak at about 15m/s, making it suitable for continuous trickle charging and higher output during strong winds.

Key features

  • Available in 48V version with dedicated MPC-2 controller to rectify and regulate turbine output for battery charging.
  • Low-friction, brushless three‑phase alternator with rare-earth magnets and slipring for 360° rotation, reducing cable twisting and maintenance.
  • Automatic mechanical furling tail that activates around 15m/s to reduce rotor speed, protect the tower and moderate output in gale‑force winds.
  • Starts running from about 2m/s and cut‑in charging from around 3m/s, extending generation hours in light and moderate winds.
  • MPC‑2 controller includes LCD display, Run/Stall/Reset control, temperature‑compensated charging and options for remote sensing and shutdown.

Where to use

This Rutland FM1803-2 48V wind turbine is designed for land-based off-grid systems where a reliable DC power source is needed and grid connection is impractical. Typical applications include telecom masts, CCTV and security, instrumentation and environmental monitoring, rural homes and cabins, farm buildings and remote safety or signage systems.

The turbine can be used stand‑alone to charge a 48V deep‑cycle battery bank, or as part of a hybrid wind‑solar system alongside PV modules and a solar charge controller. For UK projects, Energian can arrange design and installation via trusted partners to ensure the tower, foundations, cabling, protection and battery system meet local standards and site conditions.

Technical specifications

Models available

  • Nominal system voltages: 12V, 24V and 48V versions

Power and current ratings (FM1803-2 performance curve)

  • 5m/s (approx. 11mph) wind speed: 60W (4A at 12V) / 60W (2A at 24V) / 60W (1A at 48V)
  • 11m/s (approx. 25mph) wind speed: 460W (32A at 12V) / 460W (16A at 24V) / 460W (8A at 48V)
  • 15m/s (approx. 33mph) wind speed: 404W at 11m/s (12V/24V), 840W peak at 15m/s.

Generator and rotor

  • Generator type: low-friction, brushless three‑phase alternator with high‑specification rare‑earth magnets
  • Output: variable frequency AC, approximately 120V line‑to‑line under normal conditions
  • Yaw rotation: sliprings and brushgear for 360° free rotation on tower
  • Aerofoil blades: three injection‑moulded glass‑filled blades at fixed pitch
  • Rotor: 3‑blade aerodynamic rotor runs in around 2m/s wind, generation starts at about 3m/s

Furling and protection

  • Furling tail system: automatic mechanical furling at wind speeds over 15m/s (approx. 35mph / 56kph)
  • Governing devices: electronic stalling via MPC‑2 controller to prevent battery overcharge; mechanical furling tail for high wind protection
  • Battery overcharge control: charging continues until battery reaches 14.4V per 12V equivalent, then turbine is switched to “stalled” mode; charging resumes when voltage falls to 12.5V per 12V equivalent.
  • Over‑temperature protection: controller fan cooling and temporary stalling if internal temperature is high.

MPC‑2 controller

  • Function: transforms and rectifies turbine high‑voltage AC to DC at system voltage (including 48V version) for battery charging
  • Operating modes: low and high wind power ratios to optimise rotor performance across wind range
  • LCD display: shows operating mode, battery volts, amps, watts and ampere‑hours generated
  • Controls: Run/Stall/Reset button; separate RUN/STOP switch supplied for parking turbine
  • Sensor and interface features: temperature compensation sensor; remote voltage sensor input; serial data socket for remote display, data collection or controller interface cable with app; remote shutdown contact.

  • Cut‑in wind speed: 3m/s
  • Minimum tower height: 6.5m on land (approx. 21.5ft)
  • Turbine diameter: 1800mm (approx. 71in)
  • Turning radius: 1145mm (approx. 45in)
  • Post fixing internal diameter: 81mm
  • Post fixing external diameter: 91mm over minimum of 1m length to clear blade tips
  • Turbine net weight: 29kg (approx. 63.9lbs)
  • Tower top weight: 35.32kg
