Diesel Generators
Why choose a diesel generator?
Diesel generators are a solid choice for home backup and site power. Here’s why they’re popular - and where they make the most sense.
- Lower running costs. Diesel engines use less fuel than equivalent petrol models, so cost per kWh is lower and refuelling is less frequent.
- Built to last. Heavier-duty components and lower operating revs mean diesel sets are designed to run for hours at a time and deliver long service lives. Choose 1500 rpm models where you expect regular, multi-year operation and 3000 rpm models for back-up or lighter/seasonal duty.
- Long runtimes. Larger tanks and lower fuel use make diesels ideal as standby power during blackouts.
- Safer fuel handling. Diesel is less flammable than petrol and stores well when kept in proper containers.
- Less to maintain. No spark plugs or carburettors to worry about, and service intervals suit regular or extended use.
- Strong under load. High torque at low revs helps start tough loads (compressors, pumps, fridges) without fuss.
- Steady, clean power. Governed 50 Hz engines with AVR provide stable voltage and frequency. Pair with an ATS for seamless changeover when the mains fails.
- Higher power options. It’s easier to find diesel generators in larger sizes (5–20 kVA and up), including three-phase models for workshops and small businesses.
- Quieter in proper canopies. Modern acoustic enclosures and 1500 rpm designs keep noise in check for home or yard use.
When might petrol be better?
If you want something very light and portable for occasional use or camping, a small petrol inverter generator can be quieter right next to you and easier to carry. For regular backup or heavier loads, diesel is usually the smarter pick.
At Energian we stock a range of diesel generators (compact open-frame and quiet canopied sets) and ATS kits. Tell us what matters - budget, run time, noise, and what you need to power - and we’ll point you to the right model.
