                  1. HOW DOES THE WIND TURBINE GENERATE ELECTRICITY?

A wind turbine uses moving wind air to create electricity. Wind travelling across the blades creates lift — like an aeroplane wing — which drives a generator producing electricity. Electricity generated by the wind turbine is sent to the home (farm, garage, or any other property), where it displaces electricity that would otherwise have been generated by more traditional sources such as coal, oil, nuclear and natural gas and transmitted to you through the grid.

                  1. HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY DOES THE WIND TURBINE PRODUCE PER MONTH

The three main factors that influence wind turbine power output are mean wind speed, air density, and blade radius. Wind speed largely determines the amount of electricity generated by a turbine. Higher wind speeds generate more power because stronger winds allow the blades to rotate faster. Faster rotation translates to more mechanical power and more electrical power from the generator. You can find out the mean monthly wind speed in the UK for the period 2002-2021 if you download an Excel spreadsheet from the government site

                https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1112377/ET_7.2_OCT_22.xlsx

Using these mean wind speeds and the turbine 24V/48V power curve below we can estimate how much electricity the wind turbine produces per month.

The results are shown in the table below.

Month Wind speed, m/sec Hourly output, Wh  Monthly output, kWh
                January 5.25 190.00 141.36
                February 5.04 182.40 122.57
                March  4.84 175.16 130.32
                April  4.27 154.53 111.26
                May 4.32 156.34 116.32
                June 3.96 143.31 103.18
                July 3.86 139.69 103.93
                August 3.96 143.31 106.62
                September 4.17 150.91 108.66
                October 4.48 162.13 120.62
                November 4.73 171.18 123.25
                December 4.94 178.78 133.01
                TOTAL 1421.1 kWh/year

Typical electricity usage for a two-bedroom home sits between 2,500 and 3,000 kWh per year. So, a 1600W wind turbine is able to generate from 47% to 56% of a typical two-bedroom home per year. Depending on your location and actual wind speeds the actual turbine generation can be lower or higher. If you want to look at the mean wind speeds in your location then

                      4. ARE THE TURBINE BLADES STRONG?

The Raptor G4 wind turbine blades are made from revolutionary carbon fibre composites (used by the aircraft industry) — The same material used in the F-22 Raptor fighter jet. Designed for high speed, high efficiency, affordability, and durability.

The Raptor G4 blades can last 75 years in the sun! Made to withstand extreme heat and sub-zero temps, the blades are designed for high speed, high efficiency, affordability, and durability. They are rated to withstand 56 m/sec winds and are designed to operate real PMGs (permanent magnet generators) at high speed in low winds to create the maximum power a PMG can put out. The precision, aerodynamically tapered blades feature a 2.7 m/sec start-up speed.

                1. WHAT TYPE OF PERMISSION DO I NEED TO INSTALL A WIND TURBINE FOR MY HOME?

Planning permission for wind turbines depends on which region you live in the UK. If you live in England or Scotland, then certain wind turbines are permitted without planning permission, but they require adherence to strict conditions. In England, building-mounted wind systems were relaxed as part of 2011 legislation, but in Scotland, you will still require planning permission for this.

Permitted development for wind turbines in England

It is possible to install a wind turbine as a permitted development, although it needs to fulfil all of the following criteria:

A wind turbine mounted on a building:

                • Need to be a detached house and be surrounded by other detached houses in the vicinity
                • Must comply with the MCS planning standards
                • One turbine is considered permitted development and the property must not have an air source heat pump installed already. Otherwise, you need to ask for planning permission.
                • Including the blades, no part of the turbine should protrude more than 3 meters above the highest part of the chimney, and the overall height of the house + wind turbine should not exceed 15m.
                • The distance between the ground and the lowest part of the wind turbine needs to exceed 5m
                • A minimum of 5m needs to be between your turbine and the boundary of your property.
                • The swept area of a building-mounted wind turbine cannot exceed 3.8m2 which means that a turbine rotor diameter does not exceed 2.2m.
                • A wind turbine cannot be sited on the roof of a building within the grounds of a listed building.
                • If you live in a conservation area/world heritage site, you are not allowed to position the turbine on a wall that would make it visible from a highway.
                • The wind turbine must be removed as soon as practically possible when no longer needed for Microgeneration
                • Be sited as far as practically possible to limit the impact on amenities of the local area.
                • The installation must not be sited on safeguarded land.

A wind turbine installed as a stand-alone installation:

Can also be considered a permitted development if the following criteria are adhered to:

                • The wind turbine must adhere to the MCS planning standards
                • The installation must not be sited on safeguarded land.
                • One turbine is considered permitted development and the property must not have an Air Source Heat Pump installed already. Otherwise, you need to ask for planning permission.
                • The highest part of the wind turbine blade must not exceed 11.1 meters
                • The distance between the ground and the lowest part of the wind turbine needs to exceed 5m
                • The turbine’s height + 10% is the distance that the wind turbine needs to be from the boundary of your property.
                • The swept area of the wind turbine cannot exceed 3.8m which means that a turbine rotor diameter does not exceed 2.2m.
                • If you live in a conservation area/world heritage site, the closest part of the wind turbine needs to be further away from any highways than the closest part of the house.
                • Permitted development rights are not applicable for an installation on a listed building or on a building in a conservation area/world heritage site.
                • The blades cannot be coated in a reflective material.
                • When no longer needed for Microgeneration, the wind turbines are removed as soon as practically possible.

Permitted development of wind turbines for Scotland

In Scotland, a building-mounted development requires planning permission, but on the other hand, a standalone development doesn’t, unless it contravenes the following points:

                • It is not the only wind turbine within this property
                • It is situated less than 100metres from your next-door neighbour
                • It sits on a world heritage site; is on scientific research land; is considerably near a listed building or is near land for archaeological purposes.

You also need to make sure that the developer who is building the wind turbine speaks to the local authority and gets clearance for the size and type of wind turbine being installed.

Permitted development of wind turbines for Wales

Permitted development rights do not apply to wind turbines mounted on a dwelling house or building within the curtilage of the dwelling house. It will be necessary to make a planning application to your local planning authority if you wish to install a building-mounted wind turbine.

The installation, alteration, or replacement of a stand-alone (not building-mounted) wind turbine within the boundaries of a dwelling house can be considered to be permitted development, not needing an application for planning permission, provided ALL the limits and conditions listed below are met.

                Limits to be met:

                • Development is permitted only if the stand-alone wind turbine installation complies with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme Planning Standards or equivalent standards.
                • The installation must not be sited on safeguarded land.
                • Only the first installation of any wind turbine would be permitted development, and only if there is no existing air source heat pump at the property. Additional wind turbines or air source heat pumps at the same property require an application for planning permission.
                • The highest part of the stand-alone wind turbine must not exceed 11.1 meters.
                • The distance between the ground level and the lowest part of any wind turbine blade must not be less than five meters.
                • An installation is not permitted if any part of the stand-alone wind turbine (including blades) is in a position that is less than a distance equivalent to the overall height of the turbine (including blades) plus 10% of its height when measured from any point along the property boundary.
                • The swept area of any stand-alone wind turbine blade must be no more than 9.6 square meters which means that a turbine rotor diameter does not exceed 3.5m.
                • In the case of land within a Conservation Area, the stand-alone wind turbine would be installed so that it is visible from a highway that bounds the curtilage of the dwellinghouse.
                • permitted development rights do not apply to a turbine within the curtilage of a Listed Building or within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a World Heritage Site, or a site of special scientific interest.

In addition, the following conditions must also be met. The wind turbine must:

                • Use non-reflective materials on blades
                • Be removed as soon as reasonably practicable when no longer needed for microgeneration
                • Be sited, so far as is practicable, to minimise its effect on the amenity of the area.

You may wish to discuss with the local planning authority for your area whether all of these limits and conditions will be met. In addition, your Local Planning Authority may have Article 4 Directions in place which remove permitted development rights in certain areas. It is therefore the responsibility of the landowner to confirm that permitted development rights do exist and that conditions can be met.

                1. WHY DO THE TURBINES NOT SPIN AT TIMES?

The most common reason that turbines stop spinning is because the wind is not blowing fast enough. The RAPTOR G4 wind turbine needs a sustained wind speed of 6 MPH (2.7 m/sec) or higher to operate.

DIGITAL ALL-IN-ONE CHARGE CONTROLLER WITH LED BATTERY VOLTAGE METER

                1. WHAT DOES THE CHARGE CONTROLLER?

The Charge Controller is a Hybrid Wind and Solar Diversion Charge Controller to charge a 48V battery bank from the Wind Turbine only or from a combination of the Wind Turbine and Solar Panels array up to 2400W.

                1. IS THE CHARGE CONTROLLER OF THE DIVERSION TYPE?

YES. The Charge Controller monitors the battery bank preventing it from overcharging by adding a dump load to the battery electronically. They require an external load, typically a resistive load bank, which dissipates the excess energy in the form of heat. Optional heating coils are available that can be installed in hot water heaters to dump the excess energy into the tank thereby heating the water. The Charge Controller guarantees to keep your wind turbine under a load and slowed down. The solar panels, if they have been connected, will disconnect.  If you need to increase the wattage of the dump load, simply buy another dump load and stack it. Make sure it matches the voltage of the divert load on the Charge Controller.

                1. CAN I USE THE CHARGE CONTROLLER WITHOUT A BATTERY BANK TO DRIVE DC LOADS?

NO. Do not operate the Charge Controller without batteries!

                      4. DO I NEED TO ADJUST THE CHARGE CONTROLLER?

Don’t make adjustments to the controller’s programming unless you are experienced or your system requires it. The buttons are located at the bottom of the digital control unit. If you need to re-program the Charge Controller then read carefully Missouri Wind and Solar Digital Charge Controller Information and Custom Programming Instructions See also Missouri Wind and Solar’s Digital Charge Controller Programming video on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFaKxd6xyWo&t=243s

WE RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT CHANGE THE CONTROLLER’S SETTINGS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO. READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL INSTRUCTIONS INCLUDED WITH YOUR EQUIPMENT. THE WARRANTY WILL BE VOID IF THE SETTINGS ARE CHANGED UNNECESSARILY.

                  1. WHAT BATTERIES CAN BE CHARGED BY THE CHARGE CONTROLLER?

The Charge Controller is compatible with Lead Acid and Deep Charge AGM batteries - cannot be used with Lithium batteries. Battery Status LED lets you know your battery's actual voltage!

                  THE BATTERY BANK

WARNING: Never mix and match batteries in the battery bank. All batteries must be the same type, size, and general age. An old, mismatched, or shorted battery in a bank causes a lot of problems. NOTE: New batteries act like old batteries and will need a few cycles before they operate correctly.

                  1. WHAT IS THE BATTERY BANK CAPACITY OF THE WIND POWER SYSTEM?

The Wind Power System uses four well-known ROLLS S12-AGM290 12V 260Ah Deep Cycle AGM batteries with a total capacity of 12,480Wh (4x 260Ah (C20) @12V in serial). Maintenance Free VRLA battery, no need to add water or acid during application. Patented structure design with high utilisation of active material, maximum improvement in the utilisation rate of active material and the utilisation ratio of battery internal space, 5%-10% higher capacity than similar products in the market. High performance for large current discharge.

                  1. WHAT IS THE CYCLE LIFE OF THE BATTERY?

ROLLS S12-AGM290 12V 260Ah Deep Cycle AGM batteries is designed for 1250 cycles @50% DoD (Depth of Discharge).

                  1. HOW CAN I GET THE LONGEST LIFESPAN FROM THE BATTERY?
                  1. Keep it within 23°C -  27°C and away from water and heat.
                  2. For safety reasons, do not store the batteries above 40°C or below −15°C for extended periods.
                  3. The ROLLS S12-AGM290 is a true deep cycle AGM battery designed for demanding applications. While AGM batteries can technically be discharged to 100% of their rated capacity, doing so is not recommended for regular use due to significant impacts on battery lifespan. Deep cycle AGM batteries, including the Rolls S12-290AGM, are typically designed to handle regular discharges of 60–80% of their capacity. This means you can safely use 60–80% of the battery’s rated amp-hours before recharging, which for a 260Ah battery is about 156–208Ah per cycle.
                    1. WHAT ARE THE BATTERY STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS?
                    1. Fully charge the battery before storing. Disconnect from all loads and chargers. Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. Ideal storage temperature is around 20°C (68°F); avoid temperatures below -5°C (23°F) or above 45°C (113°F).  Avoid direct sunlight and sources of heat.
                    2. Long-term storage. AGM batteries self-discharge slowly but should be recharged every 6 months if stored for extended periods to prevent deep discharge and sulfation. For winter storage, ensure the battery is fully charged before storage. Lower states of charge increase the risk of freezing at low temperatures. If stored in freezing conditions, a fully charged AGM battery is less likely to freeze than a partially discharged one.
                      1. WHEN TO CHARGE MY AGM BATTERY?
                      • Recharge when voltage drops to 12.2–12.4V (approx. 50% state of charge). Avoid letting the battery voltage fall below 12.0V, as deeper discharges shorten AGM battery life.
                      • For best longevity, recharge before the battery drops below 50% capacity (about 130Ah withdrawn from a 260Ah battery), but never let it drop below 20% capacity unless absolutely necessary.
                      • Only charge within 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F). Charging outside this range can damage the battery or reduce charge efficiency.
                      • Initial Charge: If the battery is new or has been in storage, perform a full charge before first use.
                      • After Deep Discharge: If you have deeply discharged the battery (below 50% capacity), recharge as soon as possible to avoid sulfation and capacity loss.
                      1. WHAT TO DO IF THE LOSS OF POWER IN THE BATTERY BANK IS TOO QUICK?

Check if there are any high-power electrical appliances connected. The Wind Power System's battery capacity is 12,480Wh. Normally, if the power of a connected electrical appliance is ~2000W and the battery is discharged from 100% to 50%, the Wind Power System's battery will run out in about 3.1 hours.

                      DC TO AC INVERTER

                      1. WHAT DOES A POWER INVERTER DO?

A power inverter is a device that converts battery power into mains power, i.e. it transforms 48V direct current (DC) into 230V alternating current (AC). 230V AC is the power supplied to our houses by utility companies, and this is the power required by most normal household appliances such as lights, TVs, fridges, etc. There are two main types of inverters:

                      • Off-grid inverters, which work as a standalone system and require batteries (typically used in caravans, boats, or locations without access to mains power)
                      • On-grid or grid tie inverters, which require mains power to work (typically used in household solar systems and take input directly from solar panels)

In the Wind Power System a Photonic Universe 3000W off-grid inverter only is used - i.e. the inverter which can be used to build a home 230V "grid".

                      1. WHAT TYPE OF INVERTER IS USED IN THE WIND POWER SYSTEM?

The type of power inverter which is used in the Wind Power System is a Pure sine wave inverter rated 3000W. A pure sine wave inverter provides an output of up to 3000W which follows a sine wave harmonically. This is similar to utility-supplied grid power. This inverter switches polarity ("+" and "-") between power cables smoothly; gradually increasing or reducing the voltage as required (in case you were wondering why inverters have to switch polarity: this is the essence of alternating current; polarity changes occur approximately 50 times per second).

                      1. WHAT CAN I USE A 3000W POWER INVERTER FOR?

The 3000W inverter is chosen based on the typical power consumption of standard household appliances shown in the table below (Source: https://www.photonicuniverse.com/en/how-to-choose/ac-inverter/).

                      Ok

*Appliances marked with a star are likely to have a starting power consumption several times greater than their normal working power (typically this is caused by electric motors). For example, even though electric lawnmowers have a normal working power of 1000W, their starting power is over 4000W. This means that an inverter with a continuous power of 3000W is suitable because its peak power is limited to only 6000W.

**These appliances do not have an electric motor inside but still have a variable power consumption with power spikes. Therefore they require a larger inverter than would be needed for other appliances with a similar nominal power rating.

Please also note: that this table is provided for general guidance only. The actual power consumption of your appliances, as well as starting power requirements, may vary considerably. In all cases, you will need to check the specifications of your equipment to find their continuous and starting power requirements.

If more than one device is connected to the inverter, the total power consumption should be the sum of all appliances used. This will determine the total inverter power required.

                      1. WHY 48V BATTERY BANK AND 48V DC TO 230V AC INVERTER IS USED?

This setup will provide some important benefits:

                      • The input current for the inverter will be four/two times smaller for 48V than for 12V or 24V, making the inverter and the entire system safer and more reliable;
                      • The cables between your battery and the inverter do not have to be as thick as those used for a 12V or 24V battery bank and inverter.
                        1. WHAT PROTECTION AND SAFETY FEATURES DOES HAVE THE 3000W INVERTER?

This product comes with important protection and safety features, such as a) output short circuit, b) overload, c) battery voltage too high, d) battery voltage too low, e) temperature too high, f) input voltage out of range, g) input voltage ripple too high, h) Fan block

                          1.  WHAT OUTPUTS HAVE THE 3000W INVERTER?

1 X 230V ERTB10 terminal. An adaptor may be used for more sockets, provided that the total power consumption of all appliances connected to this inverter is within 3000W..

                          1. DOES THE 3000W POWER INVERTER HAVE WIRELESS CONTROL?

YES. The 3000W inverter can work wireless with TBB Kinergy WiFi module.

                          1. WHAT TO DO IF 3000W INVERTER CANNOT POWER ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES?
                          1. First, please check whether the output power of the 3000W inverter can meet the charging power requirements of your appliances.
                          2. In case of a warning red light, take action as described in the User Manual.
                            1. WHAT TO DO IF THE USAGE TIME OF AN ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE IS TOO SHORT?

As the power of each electrical appliance is different, the discharge efficiency of the 3000W inverter is less than 100% (the best efficiency is about 90%). Hence, the actual usage time of electrical appliances may be shorter than the theoretical time. The discharge efficiency should be calculated based on the continuous power of your appliances. WIND TURBINE TOWERS

                            1. WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF THE WIND TURBINE TOWER?

Made from tubular steel, the tower supports the structure of the turbine. Towers usually come in three sections and are assembled on-site. Because wind speed increases with height, taller towers enable turbines to capture more energy and generate more electricity. The highest part of the stand-alone wind turbine must not exceed 11.1m in England and Wales. Including the blades, no part of the turbine should protrude more than 3 meters above the highest part of the chimney, and the overall height of the house + wind turbine should not exceed 15m in England.

                            1. WHERE THE WIND TURBINE TOWER CAN BE INSTALLED?

There are two ways to install a wind turbine - on the roof of a building or on the ground. For installation of the wind turbine on the roof of a building, we offer a Missoury adjustable wind turbine roof mount (see Option 1 in the Specifications section).
