Solar Lighting Kit for Three Horse Stable/Barn (12 × 36 ft)
Off-grid LED lighting system designed to provide reliable, year-round lighting for a three horses stable or a barn.
For animal welfare, feeding and inspection, a stable should have around 150–200 lux of lighting. A 12 × 36 ft stable (approx. 39.9 m²) requires roughly 5,985–7,980 lumens to achieve this. This output is provided by six 1,250 lumen LED lights.
Typical energy use for this setup is around 360–468Wh for 6 hours of daily operation. To maintain this performance through winter, including low-light conditions in northern UK locations, the system is sized with 9 × 405W solar panels (3 panels per charge controller). Modelling solar generation through a year is shown below.

What’s included
Solar panels
9 × 405W monocrystalline solar panels. Sized to maintain sufficient generation even in winter months. Suitable for roof mounting on most stable structures.
Battery storage
1x 12V 460Ah LiFePO4 (lithium) battery to store energy for evening use. Provides stable performance and long cycle life.
MPPT charge controller
3x Victron SmartSolar 150/100 MPPT controller to efficiently manage charging from the panels and protect the battery. Supports high input power and improves winter performance.
LED lighting
6 × 1,250 lumen LED batten lights (12V/24V). Bright, efficient and suitable for stable environments. Optional upgrades include PIR sensors or dimming.
Mounting system
3x Van der Valk Roof mounting kit of 3 solar panels for corrugated fibre cement sheets as standard. Alternatives available for other roof types.
Cables and switching
1x Set of all required cabling and switches to allow practical control of lighting in stalls and working areas.
